A spark lit up my lonely heart, it burns and burns inside
Hope is the bread my soul still eats, I dream and dream in stride
Her hands so pale, fingers curled, red polish shining bright
Where could I hide these calloused palms from the city lights?
She came to fix her car yesterday, right into our small shop
The moment I saw her face, my beating heart won’t stop
Long skirt swaying on her knees, her hair like ocean waves
Master called out from afar: “Boy, bring me the tools I crave!”
I’d read a story once before, in a glossy book so dear
Where a rich young girl fell in love with a poor mechanic near
So I told my master today: “I won’t wear the overalls”
I combed my hair before the glass with painted doves on the walls
She would return to take her car, I dreamed it might come true
That story from the paper pages, I’d live it through and through
Time stood still, the world went mute, when she stepped through the door
I froze in place, I could not move, I could not breathe no more
I opened wide the car door so she could slip inside
She raised her brow and coldly asked: “Who is this lowlife guy?”
She drove away, her engine’s smoke wrapped round me in the air
My eyes welled up with heavy tears, I stood in deep despair
Master came and hit my back: “Forget those paper dreams,
You’re a worker, stay a worker, wear your overalls, it seems.”
You’re a worker, stay a worker...
You’re a worker, stay a worker...
You’re a worker, stay a worker...
