Bison Peak, elevation 12,432ft, is the highest point in Lost Creek Wilderness in central Colorado. Its summit area has a broad plateau that features lots of unique rock formations, surrounded by magnificent views of several mountain ranges including Front, Mosquito, Sawatch, and the Sangres. On this occasion I did an overnight backpacking trip to the summit starting from Ute Creek Trailhead. On Friday 5/23, I hiked in 4.5 miles to set up a camp in the trees just below the summit plateau at 11,400’. The next morning I reached the summit before 7am. Despite it being a holiday weekend, I didn’t encounter anyone until I was about to leave the plateau. Overall I enjoyed my first trip to this wilderness area and will definitely be back for more in the future. Total stats: 12.5 miles with 3900’ elevation gain
