Revolutionary art, daring taste, one collector: Birth of the Modern.​

Ambassador Arnold A. Saltzman and his wife Joan built a collection that traces the radical breakthroughs of the European avant-garde, from neo-Impressionism to Cubism, with highlights by Fernand Léger, Henry Moore, Henri Matisse and František Kupka.  ​​

For Ambassador Saltzman, collecting was a form of cultural diplomacy: a way to honour innovation, preserve legacies and foster dialogue across borders. Together, the couple championed institutions from the Nassau County Museum of Art to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, leaving a legacy that celebrates art as, in his words, a ‘hospital for the soul’. ​
