While conventional laboratory testing is a useful and necessary tool for all patients, its orientation towards the disease-oriented, medical paradigm limits its value in aspects of performance enhancement for the athletic patient. Due to advances in laboratory methodologies and recent discoveries in sports science research, new testing tools exist to assess the biochemistry of the athletic patient. The innovative and validated biomarkers in several test profiles from Genova Diagnostics help to assess the athlete from a health-oriented, functional paradigm. This presentation discusses biomarkers and pathways that provide insight into common metabolic blockages, nutrient deficiencies, gastrointestinal issues, and hormone imbalances that can prevent athletes from reaching their full potential in sport.
