Buckinghamshire Council has a Habitat Bank Regulation service, which has successfully registered two sites on Natural England’s National Biodiversity Gain Site Register including Lopemede Farm. This video explores the council’s experience and offers tips on enabling sustainable development while improving local biodiversity through habitat banks. Lopemede Farm, located in the Thame Valley Biodiversity Opportunity Area in West Buckinghamshire, is one of two habitat banks registered with Buckinghamshire Council. It plays a key role in local nature recovery and long-term conservation efforts. This collaborative project, led by Buckinghamshire Council, landowner Mr. Eddie Rixon, the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment (ToE) as the broker, and the River Thame Conservation Trust (RTCT) as the responsible body, has delivered impressive results:
• Restoration of three seasonally wet riverside meadows, upgrading them from ‘Other Neutral Grassland’ in Poor Condition to ‘Floodplain Wetland Mosaic’ in Moderate Condition.
• Increased botanical diversity across an additional 10 hectares of ‘Other Neutral Grassland’ outside the floodplain, improving its condition from Poor to Good.
• Creation of a wildlife corridor with a belt of scrub, providing critical habitat connectivity through the habitat bank.
These outcomes were achieved through innovative approaches, including:
• Creating a network of shallow scrapes, designed to maximize plant, invertebrate, and amphibian diversity, while also benefiting wetland birds such as lapwing, snipe, and teal.
• Increasing botanical diversity by utilizing green hay and seed dispersal, followed by mowing and aftermath grazing to improve the overall ecological health of the site.
This project is part of a broader strategic plan to restore and conserve biodiversity. It sets a strong example of how collaborative efforts between Local Planning Authorities and landowners can enhance biodiversity while promoting sustainable development.
