Moonbeams by The Bill Evans Trio is one of the most intimate, lyrical and emotionally resonant jazz albums of the 1960's - and in this video, I compare the brand new Craft Original Jazz Classics reissue with and earlier OJC cut in 1990.
The new reissue is mastered in an all analog process from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearant. It is pressed on 180gm vinyl at RTI. The heavy duty gloss front tip on jacket is by Stoughton Printing.
The earlier OJC release was remastered by Phil Delancy, possibly from a digital source.
We'll look a bit at the history and importance of Moonbeams, recorded in 1962, shortly after the tragic loss od bassist Scott La Faro. With Chuck Isreals on bass and Paul Motian on drums, this was Bill Evans return to the studio - and the result is a stunning collection of ballads filled with space, nuance and reflection.
