During this time, Clinton served as chair of the National Governors Association from 1986 to 1987, where he led an effort to develop a national welfare reform policy. Most notably, Clinton's years as governor are remembered for his efforts to reform the public school system, and catalyze economic growth. He convinced lawmakers to pass numerous educational reforms, which carried into policies he enacted during his time as President.

In this clip, the former President reflects on how his twelve years as Governor of Arkansas were the most valuable preparation for the presidency. Specifically, he notes he learned to collaborate with people who held differing viewpoints, navigate the challenges of passing legislation in an often contentious legislature, set clear priorities, articulate a compelling vision, and lead the public towards achieving common goals.
