In this the Sixth of my videos following pricklysauce.com build of, what I like to think of, as a bike wardrobe, I build the slider hooks, make a bike repair clamp and take the shed down ready to take to the clients garden.
The sliders are the key to the bike wardrobes design allowing the bikes to be hung up and slid into the small shed. It has to work!
I make these sliders out of exterior ply cutting four discs with a hole in the middle to go over the scaffold pole rail.
Slots are routered for the four ball bearing race wheels and each unit is bolted together with three threaded rods and some nice flush bolts.
A bit of sanding and screw in a standard bike hook and they are all ready to be fitted and tested out.
With any new idea you never truly know if it will work! I had prototyped the idea and was pretty confident though until the bikes are hung and sliding there is always a little tension. There is great relief when your idea works in reality. This is such a driving force for me and is what makes designing and creating so exciting.
I easily stacked five bikes in the shed, unfortunately I don't have an off road unicycle like the client, though he kindly supplied me with some footage of his exploits. Cool.
I had allowed a little wiggle room in the size of the shed and an additional sixth bike could be accommodated.
Part of the design of the bike shed was to be able to easily do maintenance on the bikes and I decided to make a bike clamp out of an off cut of the scaffolding and ply.
A simple though effective bike clamp that slots into one of the scaffolding fittings on the end post and a nice little storage holder inside the shed.
All to do now is to unbolt the shed into its parts and drive it to the clients garden to build it for them.
The next and final video will follow the final put together of the bike wardrobe.
