Well, until sometime in the evening of this past Friday night, I had no idea what a Bike Jam was. I guess I’ve been pretty sheltered and conservative in my cycling ways, until I started to get more involved in my Twitter and Instagram Bike communities.
So, on Friday evening, when my new bike friend, Kurt tagged me on a bike jam post asking if I was going to the bike jam sunday night, I said “WHAT IS THIS” and “SIGN ME UP!”
When I was trying to think of how to even explain what Bike Jam is, I couldn’t think of how to describe it, so I asked my friend, Ian Walker to give me the elevator pitch. Here’s what he said.
Bike jam is a group ride with music where participants decorate their bikes up in brilliant lights and dress themselves in fun clothes!
If you haven’t been to a group ride before, it’s actually a really great way to ride on the roads without feeling unsafe. This group was very organized, with several volunteer ride marshalls making sure that the streets were blocked off as we rode by, and making sure we were always safe.
It was astounding how many people showed up on their bikes. We had probably about 400 people on their bikes of all shapes and sizes.
The ride went from Central Park, downtown Winnipeg, to the Northwest side of the city, back through Wolseley and ended up in St Boniface at Whittier Park where a little party happened.
Um, no one told me I had to have a nap during the day, or maybe sleep in a little, soooo I didn’t make it to the end, but you can bet I’ll be there next time.
Anyway, the best thing about a ride like this is that if you’re uncomfortable riding on the streets, this is a great way to get your feet wet, while hanging out with other like minded bike folks. The ride proceeds at a very slow space and you’ll have ride marshals ahead of you, behind you and on all sides.

This ride in particular only gets announced a couple of days beforehand, so you have to pay attention.
