Video by Benjamin Portis
After just 6 months since first seeing Big Yawn perform, we are thrilled to welcome them to the Research family. A compelling prelude to their debut album "No!" due out in late 2019.
Over six years the Melbourne-based group has evolved, with members of the band running various releases through label and collective Fallopian Tunes. As of 2019, Big Yawn had become a four-member music group, motivated by a history of studio production, prolific collaboration and quality hangout time.
The groups freshest effort 'Skin Rat/Thomas' captures the band performing live in the studio, and it's typical Big Yawn: fat and punchy low-end bass; drums and live drum processing; delay fx samples; thick syrupy synths. 'Skin Rat' is a hyperbolically dubbed out, tongue in cheek, magnetic blend of UK garage, footwork and breaks. And 'Thomas' takes cues from a slightly damaged post-punk sound, amplifying a brittle and sinister type of atomic porn-funk.
Limited to 200 copies.
Hand numbered and housed in a screen-printed sleeve with sticker. Artwork by Julian Hocking.

Physical Release: 11th December 2020
About This Release:
Research Records continue their voyage into Elite Beats extraordinary back catalogue with their second compilation Selected Rhythms Vol. 2. The chosen tracks are lifted from the Portland collectives three-part cassette series Casual Rhythms; a treasure chest of meditative and genre-defying instrumentals where percussion and dub accents prevail.
Elite Beats approach to producing music is their routine for respite. The band reflects when they come together weekly, its an opportunity to put down their other projects, ambitions, work and life stresses for a few hours and just be. This spirit flows into their free-form expression, absorbing both the band and the listener. Additionally,Elite Beatreveals the foundation of their output lies in the discipline of being able to sustain vibration through repetition. Theres a constant coiling mantra throughout each track, the band commenting while many musicians can get totally bored playing the same thing over and over, we love it!
The mixing process swings between embracing the warmth of live recordings and generating noise with analog manipulation. The band experiments with their recorded sound expressing we are less concerned with sounding like 90% of recorded music out there and more concerned with trying shit out.Elite Beatalso cite dub music and its process of recording as an inspiration and how this approach lends itself to a deep listening experience, a notion the band channels artfully.
Remastered for the first time on vinyl, Selected Rhythms Vol. 2 adds to the immersive and interstellar tapestry of Elite Beat. The compilation delves deep into the healing and hypnosis that characterises the collective. For those who were inevitably left looking for more with Selected Rhythms Vol. 1, heres a no-brainer. Album: Ithā Sajā [ALBUM]
Track: 1 of 9
Title: wal-Leil
Artist: Khaled Kurbeh
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RESEARCH015
Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 4th September 2026
Physical Release: 4th September 2026
About This Release:
Ithā Sajā is an ode to dusk, dawn and what’s in between.
Or, Ithā Sajā is a collection of piano recordings I made in my Berlin studio between:
– dusk and dawn
– Hinterhof sununu chatter
– construction site clamour
– upstairs scuffles
– U-Bahn rumbles
– Kreuzberg and Tempelhof
– 2021 and 2022.
wal-Leil [by the night] is inspired by conversations with my friends Hend Alkahwaji and Wejdan Nassif during theatre rehearsals.
wal-Leili [by the night II] is an imagined conversation with my friend Raman Khalaf. An homage to the jurjina rhythm found in folk music of northern Iraq and Mesopotamia.
In wan-Najmi [by the star], one phrase repeats over and over with subtle changes – inspired by a procrastinating artist (quietly) dancing before a (nearly) stretched, (almost) blank canvas, dreaming up a (new but familiar) pattern.
In Ithā Hawā [to fall / to fall in love], a flâneur takes an early evening stroll along the Landwehr canal in Kreuzberg.
Tadāris [terrains] is an ongoing series of acoustic études – played with mallets, objects and fingers inside and outside the piano.
In Ithā Sajā [if it settles / when it darkens], my left hand keeps a steady rhythm while the right one wanders in search of a nocturnal motif. My eyes peek out the window. It’s the first attempts of dawn.
Marking Khaled Kurbeh’s second release with Research Records, Ithā Sajā is a collection of nine piano pieces. The gatefold vinyl features cover art and a booklet of drawings by Ida Lawrence – nine repetitions of Khaled’s upright piano, taking shape or disintegrating as one turns the page. Thank you to Alessandra Peach and Maryos Syawish from Research Records, and to everyone listening. Khaled Kurbeh - wal-Leil [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fdNuhdLAMQw/mqdefault.jpg)

Title: Put
Artist: Ex Ponto
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RESEARCH017
Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 12th June 2026
Physical Release: 12th June 2026
About This Release:
Odlazak – the third full-length from multidisciplinary artist and musician Ivan Masic as Ex Ponto – takes its name from the Serbian word for departure. It’s a theme that reverberates throughout the release as the motifs of departure, arrival and the journey between the two are woven into an intimate personal narrative from 1980s Yugoslavia to contemporary suburban Coburg and back. Odzalak feels like a bookend to a decade of concerted, illuminating visits to the place of his birth and a countenance to the departure that long defined his youth.
Alongside Ex Ponto’s signature mix of electronic and organic textures, Masic has interspersed moments of exchange from his homeland. The haunting sound of the gusle — a traditional Serbian instrument played by his ancestors — opens the album, alongside 40-year-old VHS recordings of family members reflecting on life and death. The cover was designed by long-time friend Rick Milovanovic (TRiC), whilst photographs from Masic’s visits to Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina by his wife, photographer Sarah Pannell, are featured on the inner sleeve. The release was mastered and partially mixed by Belgrade-based Goran Simonoski (La Plant), a collaboration rooted in shared lineage and a mutual love of the darker edges of the sonic spectrum.
Taking cues from ambient to kosmiche, dub to post punk and everything in between, this is a sonic journey as much as it’s a personal one. Part Balkan Bladerunner soundtrack, part Vini Reilly in wonderland, Odzalak is Ex Ponto’s most pointed and heady release to date, equally at ease in the club and at home. Digital Release: 30th August 2024
About This Release:
Rafet studied music from a young age. Tertiary education brought about further teachings in jazz. Growing up in the family village of Miniara (North Lebanon) saw to an inquiry into maqamat and traditional arabic musics post study. After composing for multiple ensembles and performing in various projects over the years, Rafet settles into his own artistry with You Are In The Embrace of The History. This body of work is one that is personal; sighting connection to a land, spirit and devotion to a holy other.
You Are In the Embrace of The History delivers longing with grace, a realisation of ancestral memory with the eloquence of an internal knowing. Finding home in the cradle of the poem, a universal affirmation lies deep within an irregular heartbeat.
The listener is offered an invitation to enter into the vista of expansive harmonic voicings, anticipating resolution. The work is edged by expressions of spiritual jazz and tempered by the scope of ambient musics.
Rafets offering has the humility to pose questions (the illumination and the ecstasy). In the Dead Sea, there are no fish. Rafet - You Are in the Embrace of the History Now (A2) [Audio]](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/gaRR4esRmCw/mqdefault.jpg)

Formats: 12 Vinyl/Digital
Digital Release: 25th June 2021

About This Release:
Research Records indicate their inclination for cosmic instrumentation and kraut pervaded polyrhythms once again with an introduction to newcomer Glass Beams. Recorded at the beginning of 2020, Mirage is the first release from the artist, issuing four compositions that lend from a profusion of sounds and influences.
The albums opener and title Mirage arrives with a coiling vocal mantra that conspires with a sliding bassline and transcendent synthwork, reminiscent of early 70s prog jams yet inverted and futuristic. Taurus is a brisk arrangement, steeped with spaghetti-western elements and space-jazz to pave the way for the agile Kong. Rife with psych-fusion guitar phrases and instrumentation, Kong unfolds like a forecast lysergic voyage. The finale Rattlesnake nudges the serpent with intergalactic scales and spellbinding riffs. We may not know much about the enigmatic Glass Beams but Mirage is one epic inauguration, leaving the listener with more questions than answers. Formats: Digital
Digital Release: 12th May 2023
About This Release:
Mouche returns to Australian label Research Records with his debut single Juice. The forthcoming album, Lake Songs out in late May 2023.
Active on the Melbourne scene in projects such as Crepes/The Murlocs/Swazi Gold/Dreamin Wild, Tims first album Live From The Bubble arrived back in 2020 as an ode to his aptly named studio space - The Bubble.
Lake Songs builds on those same atmospheres, showcasing the inward-looking craft of his one-man band. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long were introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouches talent for harmony shines through on its own level.
Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in Juice or Crystal Water. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it. Artist: Swazi Gold
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RESEARCH04
Formats: Vinyl LP/Digital
Digital Release: 8th March 2019
Physical Release: 8th March 2019
About This Release:
Swazi Gold have created a debut album that shimmers like the coast. There are six songs, two created by each member; through pure collaboration and participation. Swazi Gold are a true democracy.
Formed by the chief songwriters from Melbourne bands Crepes, Dreamin Wild and Sagamore, this new band brings old friends together. Chris Jennings and Sam Cooper grew up in the Victorian coastal towns of Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, while TimKarmouche was an inland man, hailing from Ballarat in the state’s north-west.
“We’ve been playing together for so long; in different mediums and in different bands. We’ve played our own key roles, but now we know what each other wants. Swazi Gold shows off our relationship from over the years, which is really cool,” says guitarist and bassist Jennings.
Swazi Gold’s other guitarist and bass player, Cooper, has a theory about the unifying power of their regional origins:
“It’s this kind of small town thing where you strive to be different and creative. Because you’re more isolated, you focus on your creativity and align yourself to similar people. I think growing up down the coast has meant I’ve continued to be drawn to people from other isolated places,” he says.
It’s this togetherness that’s at the heart of Swazi Gold’s debut album,Jehovah’s Whispers.Recorded in a single weekend in 2017 at the Cooper’s family home in Ocean Grove (affectionately termed the “Cooper Ranch”)Jehovah’s Whisperscaptures a musical intimacy and deep friendship between the three members.
“The bond with all the tracks on the album isn’t necessarily lyrical, but it’s 100% sonic. The simplicity of the instruments we use and the set-up we have is what’s really rad,” says Jennings.
“It’s a fantasy of what we imagined Jehovah might be whispering in your ear,” he adds, grinning.
Drawing from their collective love of African music, American funk, and quirky, melody-driven pop music, the album explores the space between conventional genres and styles of production.
“Using drum machines has made the song-writing process a lot quicker and opened up a whole new avenue stylistically. We can move more into that dance or groove-based style. It’s kind of an EDM style of production, without the matching sound. That’s how it’s different,” says synth and keys player Karmouche.
Lyrically, the songs address themes like moving to Melbourne, realising personal limitations and seeing a thriving country town fade to nothingness. There’s a brooding one in there for anyone who’s ever been ripped off, too.
But withJehovah’s Whispers,it’s the impeccable timing from two drum machines that propel each track forward and bind the six songs so tightly.
“The drum machine is chomping away the whole time. In a live set, there’s a lot of energy straight away. Everyone’s dancing straight away; we’re dancing straight away. It’s really fun,” says Jennings.
Jehovah’s Whispers is an album that proves the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And in amidst the love and equality, there’s still a heap of bite and attitude. Swazi Gold - As You Go](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/jIlphNt70gY/mqdefault.jpg)

Title: Bad Boy 4 Now
Artist: Big Yawn
Label: Research Records
Cat#: RRC02
Formats: Cassette/Digital
Digital Release: 4th September 2020
Physical Release: 4th September 2020
About This Release:
Research Records presents Melbourne electronic quartet Big Yawns second contribution to the label, South Preston Garage. A title to honour the bands beloved bandroom, S.P.G compiles demos extracted from the studio for a digital release with a limited run of cassettes. Big Yawn reflects that completing the EP presented the challenge of creatively engineering the lo-fi recordings in a way that offered thrilling and creative insight for us and perhaps some replay value for the listener.
S.P.G embodies Big Yawns trademark pastiche, fusing together rich percussion and sweeping synthesizers that are recontextualised through an extensive shed jam. The band characterises the first two tracks British Teeth and Burno as Big Yawn flavoured DnB, with refracted drum phrasing and unrelenting delays. Cascading acid-tinged bass rules in the quivering 4 Dads; a venture into the bands stockier temperament. The panoramic Burton Bell delivers raw and biting percussion, while remaining faithful to electronics with its layered sampling. The release then disperses into seaside rapture with its farewell Bad Boy. On Bad Boy, the band comment that the track is perhaps our most melodic number to date, with heavily looping synths evoking a Hiroshi Sato/city-pop feel.
What is perhaps most unique about Big Yawn is that they present familiar electronic sounds amplified as a live band. A timely release; S.P.G translates the satisfaction of hearing a live band in a period when all we really want is to go to a gig.
