After a suggestion by pannen I tried bringing the Big penguin to the ski lift. Surprisingly, it actually worked, although the setup was very precise, as you can't have the penguin walk on either of the orange things directly adjacent to the lift! Unfortunately the penguin falls off before the ski lift starts moving, so no upper level penguin for us. This is the only way to drop the big penguin as far as I know.
I don't actually know if the big penguin continues moving on the death plane, but its probably not useful anyways.
