Differences in the Gospel accounts can be understood through an ancient writing technique called “literary spotlighting.” This method highlights one detail while leaving others unmentioned, without denying their presence. As a result, accounts that seem contradictory may simply be emphasizing different perspectives rather than conflicting facts.
Ancient biographies followed different conventions than modern expectations of precise, word-for-word reporting. Writers in that time often adapted details, phrasing, or focus to communicate meaning effectively to their audience. Because of this, variations between accounts should not automatically be seen as errors, but as acceptable literary practices within their historical context.
So the apparent inconsistencies arise from misunderstanding the genre and standards of ancient writing. Interpreting these texts using modern expectations of strict, camera-like accuracy leads to confusion, whereas recognizing their original conventions allows the accounts to be seen as complementary rather than contradictory.
