Bhutan is a small country in South Asia in the form of a Kingdom and known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon. The area is squeezed between India and the People's Republic of China. The country's local name is Druk Yul, meaning "Dragon Country". The dragon image was found in the flag and the symbol of the country.

Tourism in Bhutan began in 1974, when the Government of Bhutan, in an effort to increase income and to promote the country's unique culture and traditions to the outside world, opened up an isolated country for foreigners. In 1974, 287 tourists visited Bhutan. Since then the number of tourists visiting Bhutan has increased to 2,850 in 1992, increasing dramatically to 7,158 in 1999. By the end of the 1980s, tourism contributed more than US $ 2 million in annual income.

Although open to foreigners, the government is very aware of the environmental impacts that tourists can have in Bhutan's unique and almost pure landscapes and cultures. Therefore, they have limited the level of tourism activities from the beginning, preferring higher quality tourism. Until 1991, the Bhutan Tourism Corporation (BTC), a quasi-autonomous and self-financing body, implemented government tourism policies. The Bhutanese government, however, privatized the Corporation in October 1991, facilitating investment and private sector activity. As a result, currently more than 75 licensed tour companies operate in this country. All tourists (groups or individuals) must travel with planned tour packages, prepaid, guided, or specially designed travel programs. Most foreigners cannot travel independently in the kingdom. Arrangements must be made through an approved official tour operator, either directly or through an overseas agent.
