Beware of Wolves (in the church)
Acts 20.25-32 and see what else may help us stay awake and alive.
We see here that Paul went around proclaiming the Kingdom and he said that as a result, he is innocent of those people’s blood.
If we, missionaries, evangelists, pastors, teachers, elders, are not preaching and proclaiming the Kingdom message that Jesus proclaimed, will we be innocent of the blood of these people if they don’t meet Jesus in the air when he returns?
Paul said that he did not hold back from announcing to them the WHOLE purpose of God. When you listen to a pastor or follow a ministry, do they announce the whole Gospel of God, or just parts of it?
He then warns his listeners, mainly the overseers of the church, to watch out for themselves and for those that God entrusted in their care. Elders and shepherds must guard their flocks! Jesus died for these people and if you are given the ministry to care for them, you must do your job and be diligent!
Paul warns them that fierce wolves will come in among the believers from the outside, and will even arise from within their own group. And these wolves will try to draw the disciples, those trying to follow Jesus, astray.
What are wolves? I don’t think Paul was just calling people names. Wolves are ones that teach perversions of the truth. What is a perversion of the truth? Half truth, half lies. Preaching only part of the truth, or leaving part of it out, like the millennium. And, preaching and teaching false unbiblical doctrine, or remaining silent when others do. (And by doctrine, I mean every teaching of Jesus from the Kingdom and 1 God, to love and being kind.)
Paul then emphasizes that we must BE ALERT!
Paul finishes this passage circling back to what he started with, proclaiming the Kingdom. Here he also calls it a message of grace. He says that this message, the free-gift of Kingdom hope when Jesus returns (free because of what Jesus did, but it will still cost us something – our lives!), but this Kingdom message is able to build us up and give us an inheritance (resurrection, immortality, and life in the coming Kingdom!)
