For the second episode of our highlights from the EASD Annual Meeting 2025 in Vienna series, we invited Dr. Eugenia Martin-Vazquez from the ULB Center for Diabetes Research in Brussels, Belgium. Dr. Martin-Vazquez personal highlights from the conference focus on recent research into beta and other cell type in type 1 diabetes.

Her highlights include:
- Type 1 diabetes and inflammation where research shows that not only beta cells are dysfunctional in type 1 diabetes.
- Revealing the inner life of islets with a focus on regulation of hormone secretion in islet cells and intra-islet communication.
- New reliable and non-invasive approaches for assessing pancreatic beta cell mass.
- Promising research on stem cell derived islets, which are beneficial for research but also for islet transplantation in type 1 diabetes
