As soon as summer comes along we all want to be outdoors as much as possible, Fresh air, sunshine, and being part of nature is a great way to disconnect but it can be somewhat ruined by pesky mosquitos and their itchy bites, How can we avoid this?

Well, first let's understand how a mosquito hunts, and why some people get bitten more than others.
Only female mosquitos feed on blood and they only do so obtain the proteins necessary for egg production.
Mosquitos used sight and smell to hunt down a host. They are attracted to darker colors and their odor receptors are attracted to carbon dioxide and Octenol, both found in our body odor and exhaled breath, and Nonanal, an Aldehyde that naturally occurs in several natural oils such as citrus oils and rose oils and is a component of many perfumes.
In addition to this, it has been proved that mosquitos prefer people with type O blood.

Now that we know how a mosquito hunts for a host we can try to avoid being one.

Firstly, despite their name "Insect Repellants" don't actually repel insects, they work by masking or camouflaging our body odor and the carbon dioxide we exhale so that the mosquito doesn't see us as a potential host, not all repellants actually achieve this, especially natural ones.
Citronella is a popular repellant but it is only mildly effective and only when reapplied to the skin every 30-60 minutes.
There is in fact no scientific proof that bug repellant bracelets, candles, or electronic ultrasound devices actually work in repelling mosquitos, and in most cases, it has actually been proved they don't.

So how can we avoid getting bitten?
Avoid wearing perfumes and if you can, wear lightly colored clothing and use natural "repellants" or odor camouflagers that have been scientifically proven to be effective, these natural repellants are Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus and Black Pepper oil.

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is a natural product that is recommended by the CDC, the Center for Disease Control and prevention and it is commercialized by various different companies, some of the best include

As far as pepper oil goes, the component that works as mosquito repellent or odor mask is what gives black pepper its spicy taste and it's known as Picaridin or Icaridin. a 20% concentration of this has been proven to be just as effective as the popular artificial repellent known as DEET, but unlike DEET, it causes no irritation, doesn't dissolve plastics or synthetics, and is odorless and almost colorless too.
