What is the BEST medieval offhand weapon for self-defense? Assuming that swords were one of the best sidearms in the middle ages what would be the best offhand weapon in a self defense situation? Here I present to you my completely subjective and biased opinion as a longtime practitioner and instructor of historical european martial arts (HEMA) / historical fencing / historical sword fighting. ;)

What sources do I recommend to start with:
Single Sword? Giovanni dall'Agocchie.
Sword and Bucker? Antonio Manciolino.
Sword and Dagger? Giovanni dall'Agocchie.
Sword and Cape / Cloak? Giovanni dall'Agocchie.

Two Swords? Learn the other stuff first ;-) But then Achille Marozzo and Antonio Manciolino have a section on dual wielding in a duel. For self-defense (one vs. many) Godhino is a nice choice.
