Some benzoic acid is synthesized from sodium benzoate and hydrochloric acid. 15 grams of sodium benzoate is dissolved in 150 ml of water. Hydrochloric acid is added from a beaker containing 20 ml of HCl. A white precipitate of benzoic acid forms immediately. HCl is added until no more precipitate forms. The precipitate is recovered by vacuum filtration and spread on a coffee filter to dry.
