The More We Know | Belgian Chocolate Company Creates Hipster Bunny For Easter @TheMoreWeKnow | Uploaded April 2014 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Belgian chocolate company Wittamer decided to put a hip spin on the traditional Easter bunny this year.

Inspired by hipsters, a unique take on the Easter bunny has the rabbit sporting a large, old-fashioned pink moustache.

Characterized by 20-somethings who claim to be unimpressed by mainstream culture, the hipster movement is often associated with vintage clothing, organic food, progressive political ideas and an affinity for all things ironic. Now, hipsters can claim one Belgian bunny as their own as well.

Myriam Wittamer, a third-generation owner of the shop, said the hipster Easter bunny has been particularly popular with young customers. Wittamer features a new, unique Easter design every year, and this year they decided to capitalize on the popular subculture.

"It started with the moustache. And then, our graphic designer went on with the hipster movement, which is a bit, in French we would say decale, which is not quite revolutionary," Wittamer said.

The hipster bunny lives in a chocolate cup, which is filled with a praline spread and has chocolate eggs hidden inside it. The bunny itself is made out of white chocolate.

Chef and decorator Michael Lewis-Anderson said he enjoys putting surprises inside his chocolates, so he also fills the bunny's head with chocolate eggs.

Lewis-Anderson has worked at Wittamer for 25 years, and said he's been surprised how quickly the hipster bunnies are flying off the shelves.

"It's a style at the moment with hipsters, with the moustache. It's humoristic, it's cute, it's vintage and it keeps the tradition for Wittamer. So what we're doing, they're selling so well we have to make them everyday. We come in in the morning, and we say, we see the shop actually, we go in and check the shop to see what's left over from the following day, and we see the shop and say, 'Oh, there's no more left. What's happened?'" Lewis-Anderson said.

The Belgian chocolate phenomenon dates back to the 19th century when shipments of cocoa from Belgian's African colony, the Congo, began.

Chocolatiers are a popular tourist attraction for many international visitors to the Belgian capital.
