Why become a university administrator? In this interview with economist Dr. Scott Beaulier, he discusses the business of being a business school dean, and why more scholars should consider dipping their toes into university administration. The conversation also covers some of the current challenges in higher education, how to drive impactful outcomes in business education, and the role of land grant universities like North Dakota State University in advancing economic mobility for students.
This conversation took place on July 20, 2020, and was conducted by Dr. Chris W. Surprenant of the University of New Orleans. It is part of a series of conversations hosted by IHS on "Education and the Future of Work."
Dr. Scott Beaulier is the Dean of the North Dakota State University College of Business and has been since 2016, focusing on developing and enhancing opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Prior to joining NDSU, Dr. Beaulier served as Executive Director at the Center for the Study of Economic Liberty in the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. Beaulier’s research has focused on a variety of issues, including the role of policy in enhancing economic development, factors influencing success in transitioning from a socialist to a market economy, the benefits of choice in education, the role of economic freedom in development, and the link between public-sector unions and public policy.
