"If we lose a commitment to open inquiry and free expression as a core value within higher education, arguably we really undermine the mission of higher education itself," argues IHS President Emily Chamlee-Wright. In this video she is joined by Prof. Nadine Strossen, Professor of Law at New York Law School and former head of the ACLU, and Prof. Jonathan Zimmerman of the University of Pennsylvania in making a case that open inquiry and free speech on campus is vital at universities and as a part of a college education.

Dr. Chamlee-Wright makes a particular appeal to university leaders and administrators who are grappling with how best to set policies about speech on their campuses. As a former college dean and provost, Dr. Chamlee-Wright is acutely aware of the difficult position campus leaders are in, but argues they must remain firmly committed to the principles of free speech and academic freedom for faculty and students. She also argues that it's important for university leaders and administrators to develop a framework for dealing with speech-related challenges BEFORE controversy strikes. For tips on developing a framework, check out IHS's free guide for academics, 'A Framework For Campus Free Speech Policy' which provides advice and best practices: TheIHS.org/freespeechframework
