Behind the scenes in the studio: worn shock mounts, expensive rubber bands, and a question for fellow engineers.
This is a short behind-the-scenes moment from my recording setup. I’m using a Neumann U 87 and a Microtech Gefell UM-70S for stereo miking, both in shock mounts.
Over time, the rubber bands that suspend the microphones wear out. When I place the mic sideways for guitar recording, the mount now touches the frame, which defeats the whole point of a shock mount.
I recently found replacement bands for the Neumann — expensive, but available. Unfortunately, the Gefell mount is no longer made. If you know a source for replacement rubber bands or a compatible solution, I’d love to hear it.
