In Unbroken: Path To Redemption, composer Brandon Roberts created memorable themes and unique musical arcs that reflect the post-war stage of famed athlete/POW Louis Zamperini’s life story. The challenge in the film was that much of his struggle was internal, so the music was essential in expressing the complexity of Zamperini’s emotions, inner turmoil, and ultimate salvation.

One highlight of the score featured in this video was that Brandon acquired some WW2 casings online for use in his music. He was intrigued by the resonant qualities of brass artillery shells and. The vision behind it was to create a palette of melodic, rhythmic and ambient sounds that would make up the musical palette for Louis’ PTSD struggles and flashbacks to his torture at the hands of Mutsuhiro “The Bird” Watanabe.

Through a lot of experimentation and electronic processing, the shells yielded some uniquely effective results. These historic brass casings were bowed, performed, electronically manipulated and then combined with synthesized elements and a symphony orchestra to musically tell the story of the second half of Louis Zamperini’s amazing life journey.

The soundtrack was published by Universal's Back Lot Music and is available on digital platforms like iTunes - http://smarturl.it/UnbrokenPTR
