...and the punk-rock connection. Ok I'm not that big a hip-hop expert but I remember it's heyday being in the early 80s with roots in the 70s. Before old school hip-hop there was this black style I associate with the 60s. The duds in the store window are 2010 versions and not *that* different. I don't really have words or terms for it ...I think of it being Italian(?), pipe in with your thoughts.
There were probably many variants of this look, I can think of two. One was a zooty, dapper kind of "mobbed-up" look. The other more austere, kind of "orthodox" that evolved into the look that Run-DMC sported. In the 70s I remember going to the Brooklyn Labor Day Parade, where Jamacian kids had this look which had been common in the 60s but was dropped in favor of a more Super-Fly look in the 70s.
