The middle movement of this sonata stands as an immensely subdued oasis between the intense outer movements.
It consists of a series of variations on a remarkably simple theme. The first of these starts out almost as simple as the original theme (1:41), but each of its subtle changes is delightful. The second variation (3:23) is markedly more adorned and elaborate, and the third plays out in the same vein (5:00). Despite every transformation, the prevailing mood is one of peace and contentment.
After that, we get a short reprise of the theme in its original form (6:33), but this time it ends with an inconclusive deceptive cadence (7:20), serving as a transition to the Finale.
