How to stay warm in in cold weather with only a wool blanket? Well, a bed of coals is one option. This winter survival technique was made famous in the classic mountain man movie, Jeremiah Johnson and in this video I'm testing it out. We'll start by digging a trench and building a big fire to warm the soil and build a bed of coals. Then we cover the hot coals with dirt and bed down for the night. The best way to learn survival skills and winter bushcraft is to get out into the forest and try stuff. More often than not, you'll discover nuances in survival techniques that you can't learn any other way. I learned a few things while testing the hot coal bed for the first time!
