Before Christ, every person stands separated from God, alienated from His people, and without hope. Ephesians 2 invites us to remember that place of spiritual distance so that gratitude can grow and worship can deepen. Through the blood of Christ alone, those who were once far off have been brought near to God. Jesus does not simply give peace. He is our peace, breaking down every wall of hostility between us and God and between us and one another. The cross works in two directions at once, reconciling us vertically to the Father and horizontally to each other. Through Jesus, by one Spirit, we now have direct access to the Father as members of His household. We are no longer strangers or outsiders. We are fellow citizens, built together on the cornerstone of Christ Himself.
