Today's episode explores the background and the first four episodes of the BBC's ten-part serial adaptation of Great Expectations from 1967. Starring Gary Bond as the adult Pip, this is a grim telling of the story that pulls on your heartstrings, shocks you with its surprisingly dark content and entertains you throughout. All ten episodes survived the BBC's junking as 16mm telerecordings of varying quality and are available on DVD as part of Simply Media's 'Dickens Classics Collection' release.

The explanation for the blurring: I obtained the images of the 1959 serial after contacting the BFI's special collections department. Through my own sheer stupidity, I didn't see the follow-up email they sent me saying I'd have to license the images before using them in a video. They will remain blurred/unseen until I can get in touch with the stills department and license them. Thank you
