Great Expectations was first adapted by BBC Television in 1959 as a 13-part serial starring Dinsdale Landen as Pip, Colin Spaull as Young Pip, Jerold Wells as Magwitch, Helen Lindsay as Estella, Sandra Michaels as Young Estella, Colin Jeavons as Herbert Pocket, Marjorie Hawtrey as Miss Havisham, Michael Gwynn as Joe Gargery, Margot Van Der Burgh as Mrs. Gargery, Gabrielle Hamilton as Biddy, Ronald Ibbs as Mr. Wemmick, Kenneth Thornett as Mr. Jaggers, and Richard Warner as Orlick, even featuring a young Frazer Hines of Doctor Who and Emmerdale fame as the tailor's son.

Although popular at the time, this particular adaptation of the novel has become relatively obscure, and has been assumed by many as lost for decades. Fortunately, 12 of the 13 episodes still exist in the BBC Archives, while episode 8 (or 'Part Eight') is sadly missing to this day. As such, the serial has never been fully released publicly. 'Part One' is available for viewing free of charge at the BFI Mediatheque service, while the other eleven episodes can only be accessed by booking a private viewing session at the Stephen Street building in London.

Here is a brief but memorable clip from the opening of Part One, featuring the first appearance of Spaull as the infant Pip and Wells as the filthy, fearsome Magwitch.
