BattleTech Warships: The Vigilant Class Corvette
⚔️ Small, light, but deadly—the Vigilant-class corvette was one of the Terran Hegemony’s earliest WarShips and a key part of its first-line defenses in the BattleTech universe. Designed shortly after the Bonaventure-class corvette, the Vigilant was deployed in mixed squadrons alongside Bonaventures and surveillance satellites to detect and repel incursions from neighboring states. Though fragile and limited in sensors, its heavy armament made it a dangerous opponent.
🚀 Introduced in the early 24th century, the Vigilant-class was built on a very small frame—barely larger than a Merchant-class JumpShip—yet carried weapons comparable to much larger vessels. With five naval autocannons, three White Shark missile systems, lasers, autocannons, and PPCs, the Vigilant outgunned the Bonaventure but struggled to make full use of its firepower due to inadequate targeting systems. It carried one squadron of aerospace fighters, four small craft, and a detachment of space Marines, but limited cargo capacity and lack of DropShip collars restricted its versatility.
Despite these flaws, the Vigilant remained in service for centuries. While the Vincent-class corvette replaced it as the standard Hegemony patrol vessel after 2409, many Vigilants were sold or transferred to the Great Houses. They saw extensive use in the Reunification War, the Star League era, and even the early Succession Wars. The last pair were fielded by the Draconis Combine and destroyed in 2853 during the Second Succession War in battle over Hesperus II.
