Today we'll be testing various batteries I have laying around the shop, using a Battery Load Tester. All 4 batteries have been selected for this test, because they all show a different reading.

Voltage;

A load tester has a volt meter, so it will 1st show the surface charge of a battery and display that in volts. It will also show whether or not the charging system of the equipment you're working on is functioning properly, as it should display a higher voltage when the engine is running (and the magneto/alternator is charging the battery).

Amperes;

This battery load tester works by using a coiled filament inside of the tester, and when activated, this filament acts as a resistor, which will simulate a starter being engaged.

A starter creates a high amp drain on a battery, and even though a battery may show a 12v charge, it may not have the ampere output that the starter requires to turn over the engine.

Therefore, a load tester can be used to diagnose, and/or eliminate a battery as a cause of a no-start issue.

For example, you have a vehicle or riding lawn mower that doesn't start, or even turn over the engine, because the starter will not engage.

Using a multi-meter, you test the battery and it shows it holds a charge of more than 12v, so you assume the battery isn't the issue.

You could then spend valuable time searching for other issues that may not exist, as the battery may not put out the amperes needed to engage the starter.

This test can be performed on or off the vehicle. However, to test the charging circuit, the battery will need to be hooked up, with the vehicle running.
