Jesus told a rich man to sell everything, give it to the poor, and follow him. But did he actually mean it?
In this MythVision interview, Derek Lambert is joined by Dr. Bart Ehrman to discuss Jesus’ teachings on wealth, poverty, generosity, capitalism, socialism, and the prosperity gospel. But what did Jesus actually teach in his own first-century Jewish context?
Bart explains why Jesus’ message about money was shaped by his apocalyptic expectation that God’s kingdom was near. In that world, giving away one’s possessions was not a modern economic policy. It was a radical sign of loyalty to God before the coming judgment.
We discuss the “eye of the needle,” whether there was really a gate in Jerusalem by that name, the parable of the talents, the early church’s struggle with Jesus’ harsh sayings on wealth, Clement of Alexandria’s attempt to soften them, and why the prosperity gospel badly misrepresents Jesus.
