Why do millions of American Christians believe the modern state of Israel is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy? Where did that idea actually come from? And why is it shaping U.S. foreign policy in 2026?
In this conversation, I'm joined by ex-Christian Andrew Whyte to walk through the history, the theology, and the texts behind Christian Zionism — the belief that the Jewish return to the land, the modern state of Israel, Jerusalem, the temple, and Middle East conflict are tied to the end of the world.
We trace it from the apocalyptic Jesus and the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, through the books of Daniel and Revelation as ancient crisis literature, to the 19th century invention of dispensationalism by John Nelson Darby, the Scofield Reference Bible footnotes that taught generations of American evangelicals how to read prophecy, the 1891 Blackstone Memorial that preceded modern political Zionism by six years, and the line that runs through Hal Lindsey, Tim LaHaye's Left Behind, and John Hagee's Christians United for Israel.
Along the way we look at what the actual biblical texts say in their original contexts, how Christians themselves have always disagreed about prophecy, why partial preterists like R.C. Sproul and N.T. Wright reject the dispensationalist framework from inside conservative Christianity, and what happens when end-times theology becomes foreign policy.
This is a conversation, not a lecture. Andrew brings the inside experience of growing up in this world, leaving it, and studying the texts and the history seriously since.
