I show how I was able to quickly and easily release an upper ball joint from the knuckle on my 2003 Chevrolet Suburban 4x4 GMT800.
The method I used was simply striking the knuckle, just outside the ball joint hole, with a small sledgehammer. The strikes create a lot of micro-vibrations that separate the ball joint stud from the knuckle.
It is important to leave the ball joint stud nut on the threads at least a few turns since the suspension has a lot of spring tension in it. With the nut installed on the threads a few turns it will keep the spring tension from throwing the knuckle and other related parts towards you. I also like to support the lower control arm with a jack to keep the downward movement to a minimum. SAFETY FIRST!
