Ruth Isenberg and I collaborated on this time-lapse video. An aliquot of a midlog culture of Photobacterium leignothi was poured into an empty Petri dish. Ten second exposures were taken every minute or two, and spliced into this video. I think what you are seeing---just as Simon Park has showed---are "eddies" of oxygen availability. More oxygen, more bioluminescence!
