I hiked 20 miles to the most remote and isolated mountain town in America! Although small and remote, Stehekin, WA is a bit of a legend. If you’ve hiked the PCT, you know this place. For most of year there are no grocery stores, bars, restaurants, or shops of any kind open in Stehekin. There are no roads you can drive to reach the town either, the nearest road connecting you to the rest of the world ends well over 20 miles away. The only way to get to this hiker paradise hidden under the North Cascades? A long boat ride up one of the country’s largest and deepest lakes, or several days of intense hiking. Eager to undertake the adventure to reach Stehekin on foot, Rainer and I drove to the end of the road, parked our car, and took a nearly 2 hour boat ride up Lake Chelan which dumped us at Prince Creek, the gateway to the Chelan-Sawtooths Wilderness, and we were off! Stehekin (and its famous bakery 🤤) lay 20 miles ahead...
