In this video, I’m heading back to Thieves’ World, the legendary shared-world fantasy series that helped define sword & sorcery for an entire generation. Along with my friend Gareth from Books, Songs, and Other Magic, I’m launching a buddy read where we’ll be tackling one Thieves’ World anthology per month—at least for the next three months, and possibly much longer if Sanctuary keeps its hooks in us.

If you grew up reading fantasy in the 1980s or 1990s—or if you’re curious about where modern grimy, character-driven fantasy really comes from—Thieves’ World matters.

Created and edited by Robert Asprin and Lynn Abbey, the series brought together an all-star lineup of writers like Poul Anderson, C. J. Cherryh, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and many others—each telling their own stories while sharing the same city, the same gods, and the same consequences.

It’s messy, morally complex, and unapologetically adult in the best sword-and-sorcery tradition.

If you want to read along with us, here are the first three books in the series:

Thieves’ World
Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn
Shadows of Sanctuary

This is a long-form fantasy project—slow reading, shared discussion, and a real return to a world that helped shape modern fantasy as we know it. If that sounds like your kind of reading life, you’re very welcome to join us.
