This sacred song, Der lieben Sonnen Licht und Pracht, is one of the “evening song” hymns to close the day. And this is clear from the opening lines: the sun has done its work and the world comes to rest. The relative simplicity of the melody means that everyone can sing along with the hymn. The bass line has more movement in it, and although it is not figured, the occasional twist sometimes hints at a harmonic choice that is not completely straightforward. Do we see Bach the improver at work here?
