Shortly after midnight on June 22, 2024, the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) received an automated iPhone alert of a potential car accident near a steep cliff in Hanalei. KPD used RapidSOS to obtain the GPS location of the iPhone, and Officers Matthew Kaluahine, Jesse Castro, and Acting Sergeant Jason Scalzo responded to the scene, where they found a vehicle dangling about 30 to 40 feet above the rocky coastline. The driver of the vehicle was inside and unresponsive.
