On this week's REWIND, hang out with AWS’s Principal Evangelist for Video Games, Chris Melissinos, REWINDS to the late 1980's and looks at the system that Sega was launching to take on the mighty Nintendo Entertainment System, the Sega Master System!
First released in Japan in 1985, then in the US in 1986, the Sega Master System was the follow-up to the Sega SG-1000, their first attempt at a cartridge based video game console, and improved on that on in every way. Technically more powerful than the NES, the Master System also included two different cartridges' formats, a Sega Card, which were lower priced and simpler games, and a standard cartridge.
A sleek, black and red system from the future, the Master System had some fantastic arcade conversions for its time and was the origin system of beloved series like Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd.
The Master System would fall to the juggernaut that was Nintendo's NES but found a longer life in territories outside of the US and Japan, with the system being sold in countries like Brazil, where it is STILL SOLD!
But this was the first real challenger to Nintendo's dominance and set the ground work for the later launch of the Sega Genesis. So REWIND with Chris and explore some of the great games of the Sega Master System!
