Rikki Poynter | awkward encounters with hearing people @rikkipoynter | Uploaded February 2024 | Updated October 2024, 24 minutes ago.
Sometimes, I don’t want to announce to people that I’m deaf because it can get awkward, but at the same time… it’s probably bound to happen. I mean, my social anxiety (that is probably just general social anxiety but also stemming from my deafness and ableism from society) would also just prefer nobody talk to me while I’m just trying to read books and watch the news, but I also want to get to know more people since I’m finally out on my own and living in a new city (and, well, state). But yeah… things can get awkward when they don’t know one of the most vital things about you, haha.

So I am popular in my building’s laundry room slash community room because I go in there almost every single night to watch the news because I don’t have a TV in my apartment. And to read because I also don’t have a couch. So as a deaf person, sometimes I go in there with my hearing aids in. And there’s this guy that has come in about two times, uh, the previous week and at the same time that I was there. So finally, he sees me and he’s asking me, you know, “Do you just come in here to just chill out?” I’m like, “Yeah.” We had a little bit of a conversation. And the thing is, man doesn’t know I’m deaf. So I go in there last night, I don’t have my hearing aids in. He goes in there and now I’m wondering if maybe, possibly, he’s tried to talk to me. But I didn’t have my hearing aids in and now this is awkward. Oopsie daisy.
