I'm working on an OSD project (like so may others), the initial hardware-prototype is built around the LM1881 sync separator and an Atmel ATmega328p. This video demonstrates drawing of fonts/text, bitmaps and automatic fallback to generated video when input video is lost. Current code is at http://git.defcon.no/avrfbosd/ and Eagle 6.x schematics are at http://git.defcon.no/avrfbosd_hw/
