Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel. For this week's video, I am travelling on the Class 390 'Pendolino' operated by Avanti West Coast, and trying out their First Class offering.
These tilting high-speed units were introduced by Virgin Trains from 2002 onwards, representing a massive step change in quality of service on the West Coast Mainline. The main difference of course was the tilting capability, allowing faster speeds around corners, but the on-board shop and overall ambience was an equally noticeable change.
In 2019 it was announced that Virgin Trains had lost the franchise to Avanti West Coast (operated by FirstGroup and Trenitalia). This will mean the refurbishment of the Pendolino fleet, and the ordering of a new Hitachi IET fleet (š). I thought it would be apt to try out the Pendolino fleet before they get refurbished, and give my verdict of the fleet as they are now.
Today's route starts at Preston, then travels North to Lancaster and Oxenholme, both junction stations for regional routes. After this, the train continues through Penrith and then onwards to Carlisle, the last station in England on this route, and a junction for yet more regional services. We then speed across the Scottish border, before branching off to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.
