Stora Enso tested a self-driving truck for transporting softwood chips among the normal traffic at their Uimaharju plant in Joensuu. The test aimed to explore the potential for reducing emissions and improving safety in raw material transport within the factory area.
During the experiment, the vehicle was trained to navigate the Uimaharju factory area as smoothly and safely as possible. It was equipped with various steering systems, cameras, radar, and sensors that enabled the safe operation of the vehicle on the factory premises. The monitoring phase of autonomous driving covered different seasons and weather conditions, and it was completed without any accidents.
The test revealed that autonomous driving has the potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in wood chip transport within the factory area. On the Uimaharju route, they decreased by approximately one-fifth compared to regular transports.
