In this video, we see a Labrie Expert 2000 manual side load garbage truck on an Autocar WXLL chassis collecting residential recycling in Portland, OR. As you may notice, this truck is rather unique. It features a special system for handling glass, as much of the Pacific Northwest requires glass to be kept separate from other recyclables. There are many unique solutions to handling that separation, with this being the most common method: a small "bucket" is secured to the side of the truck, just behind the hopper to hold glass bottles. When this "bucket" fills up, it is mechanically raised up and over the top of the truck, emptying the glass into a larger chamber in the top of the body, where it is held separate from all of the other recyclables. The rest of the recyclables (the co-mingled cans, plastic, paper, and cardboard) are dumped into the main hopper, and compacted into the body of the truck, just as normal refuse would be. For the sake of efficiency, as well as ease and safety of sorting, glass bottles are placed at the curb side in a small recycling tub, while the rest of the co-mingled recyclables are placed in a large, two-wheeled cart that can be mechanically dumped into the truck by a cart tipper. This system is unique almost exclusively to the Pacific Northwest. I really hope you all enjoy this video!
