I’ve always dreamed of winning an Oscar.

Thankfully in recent years we’re seeing more and more ‘firsts.’ This year saw the first woman win best cinematography.

I’m celebrating this while also lamenting that it has taken so long. I’m also seeing how long it will likely take before we see a disabled director win Best Director.

This has long been the pattern in Hollywood. They refuse to hire someone of a marginalized identity because no one from that identity has a track record of profitable films. So when they do finally have a film that say… has autism representation, none of the producers, director, DP, editors, any of the crew, and often times not even the main cast… are Autistic.

Nothing about us without us… and I like to add to the end… in charge. It’s not enough to hire us as consultants.

Progress is being made. We’re seeing it in shows like The Pitt. But progress is still tectonically slow.
