Join Johns Hopkins MA in Science Writing lecturers Joanne Cavanaugh Simpson and Brian Simpson for a discussion and Q&A on their Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project on Uganda’s response to global health cuts. In the wake of slashes to USAID and other funding sources, the pair combined to report firsthand – through interviews with dozens of Ugandan government officials, academic researchers, and sex workers – on impacts to Uganda’s health system and responses, including innovations and adaptations. (Read their NPR articles focusing on Uganda here and here). They will also share information on how to secure grants from organizations such as the Pulitzer Center.
Joanne Cavanaugh Simpson is a former staff writer at the Miami Herald and a freelance journalist who has written from China, India, Nepal, Argentina, Cuba, and elsewhere. Cavanaugh Simpson served as the inaugural special adviser to the Pulitzer Center's AI Accountability Network, and her previous grant project exposed AI and police facial recognition abuses. Her work has also appeared in The Washington Post, USA Today, Scientific American, and NPR, among other venues.
Brian Simpson is editor-in-chief of the news website and daily newsletter Global Health NOW. At the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, he is also editor-in-chief of Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health magazine. Simpson earned a master's in public health from Hopkins. As a freelance writer, he previously published articles from India, Cuba, Nepal, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, and Zambia, and his work has appeared in NPR, Smithsonian, the Baltimore Sun and other outlets.
