**Quality Control**
Yamaha uses high-quality components like Mundorf MCap SUPREME capacitors and air core inductors in the crossovers. The 5-way binding posts are cut from solid brass. The cabinet construction includes laser vibrometers for precise resonance control, enhancing the overall sound quality.
**Optional Stands**
Yamaha offers the SPS-800A stands for these speakers. Priced at $699, they provide a solid foundation and can be filled with sand or other materials to reduce vibrations. They come with options for both hardwood and carpeted floors.
**Listening Impressions**
The NS-800A’s offer a lively, responsive sound similar to their larger counterparts, with a slight softness in the upper midrange. They provide a sense of presence and air, with a noticeable peak above 15kHz. The midbass and bass are rich in tone and texture, though a subwoofer is recommended for the lowest frequencies. The soundstage is expansive, adding a wrap-around effect to high-frequency details.
**Measurements**
The NS-800A’s have a more linear response than the NS-2000A’s, with a clean horizontal and vertical response. The peak at 15kHz adds an interesting top-end extension, and the overall spectral decay is very clean.
**Final Thoughts**
Yamaha took a risk with the voicing of the NS-800A, which some might not prefer. However, the fit and finish are excellent, and the optional stands are well-designed. If you’re open to a colorful sound rather than a perfectly linear one, these speakers are worth considering.
