The second Atlas I flight launched from the Cape's Pad 36B on April 18, 1991. The payload was the Broadcasting Satellite (BS) 3H. The BS series of satellites provided content for Japanese television.
The Centaur upper stage separated from the Atlas six minutes after launch. Due to contamination in the propellant ducts, the Centaur went out of control. A destruct command was transmitted by the range safety officer about 7 1/2 minutes after launch.
This video comprises two separate compilations in our collection showing slow-motion footage of the launch and early minutes of the flight. It does not include the failure or destruction.
