At Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), a waterjet cutting machine powered by a 60,000-psi stream of water mixed with garnet abrasive cuts through almost any material. From stainless steel and composites to glass, stone, rubber, wood, and exotic alloys, this waterjet process delivers clean, precise cuts without heat, distortion, dust, or fumes.
The MDF uses waterjet cutting for custom fabrication, rapid prototyping, and advanced research, preparing standardized test samples, sectioning metal prints, and processing stock materials into usable forms. The versatility of waterjet technology makes it an essential tool across industries where precision and material integrity matter most.
